Crafting Continues to be a Popular Hobby

In the 1990s there was something of an explosion of crafting which continued into the current decade. Hobby stores and art supply stores began expanding to offer tools and raw materials for people engaged in a variety of handicrafts. These ranged from the popular, such as scrapbooking and stamping to the more obscure, such as mosaic and bookmaking.

In spite of the recent economic recession, there remains a strong interest in craftwork. In fact, many people are turning to arts and crafts as a solution to their economic woes. Jewelry Beads and wire are popular items because people are now designing jewelry not as gifts or for themselves, but to sell at craft fairs and online to supplement their existing income. Those with skills in sewing, crochet, knitting, and needlework are also finding ways to make money with their crafting.

Another reason that crafting is still popular is that it is a more cost effective way to accomplish certain things. The ability to make one’s own clothes, curtains, artwork, or even refinish used furniture is much less expensive than buying those things new. On top of that, crafters, by having this creative outlet, are able to eliminate some of the stress and strain in their lives, making them calmer and more focused while attending to work and other activities.
