Domain is Everything

With the birth of the world wide web in the late 20th century, the entire face of communication, advertising, news, and entertainment was changed forever. It may have taken a few decades to gain ground, but the spread of the internet has completely altered the way most businesses and organizations operate in the world as well as creating new opportunities for individuals to connect with one another in social, political, professional, and other ways.

Right now the buzz is about social networks. Facebook has it’s movie and a Twitter account inspired a hit television series. It’s becoming more and more difficult to find a person who doesn’t have at least one social media account, whether for business or personal use. But imagine how successful these entities would have been if they hadn’t been able to obtain the right domains ?

Would FaceBook be facebook if the domain had been placetoconnectandplaygames.com? What about microblogging.com instead of Twitter.com ? Careermeetingplacelikefacebook.com instead of LinkedIn.com? Personalwebsitesformusicians.com instead of myspace?

The importance of relevant, brand-associated domain names has become obvious to all but the least net-savvy companies. In fact, domains have become their own industry, with brokers buying, trading, and selling domain registrations as if they were real estate. And, truthfully, that’s exactly what they are. The old adage about “location, location, location” is easily translated to “domain, domain, domain” in 2010.
